A. ON-GOING PROJECTS

  1. Standardization of pruning techniques for optimum production of quality  tendu leaves.

Pl.                   : Dr. Parvez Jalil

Co-PI               : Dr. Sachin Dixit

Associate         : Neeraj Kumar Kushwaha

Duration           : March 2009 to March 2012

Funding Agency : MPMFP, Federation, Bhopal

Objectives:

  • To determine the optimum pruning cycle for maximum quality leaf production on sustained basis.

  • To standardize the pruning height.

  • To conduct work and time study of pruning operation to determine per hectare working hours.

  • To design appropriate tool for pruning in order to increase the work efficiency.

  • To explore the feasibility of harvesting tendu leaves from young tendu trees by side branch cutting.

  • To carry out cost-benefit analysis of pruning operation.

  1. Propagation techniques of economically important endangered and rare species (Shisham, Salai, Achar, Maida and Bija) of Madhya Pradesh.

Pl.                   : Dr. Parvez Jalil

Co-PI               : Dr. Sachin Dixit

Duration           : May 2008 to March 2012

Funding Agency : APCCF (Development), Bhopal

Objective:

  • To identify the potential pockets of rare and endangered species.

  • To study the structural and functional characteristics of seeds of targeted  rare and endangered species.

  • To develop the propagation techniques of targeted species.

  1. To organize trainings for the staff of forest department in the maintenance of seed orchards and seed production areas.

Pl.                   : Dr. Parvez Jalil

Co-PI               : Dr. Sachin Dixit

Associate          : Dr. Anjana Rajput

Duration            : March 2009 to March 2010

Funding Agency  : APCCF (Development), Bhopal

Objective:

  • To impart training and demonstration to field officials/staff of Research and Extension wing of forest department in the management of seed orchards.

4.   Evaluation of field performance of new hybrids of teak.

Pl.                   : Dr. Anjana Rajput

Associate         : Dr. Sachin Dixit

Duration           : April 2004 to Sept. 2010

Funding Agency : Internal

Objective:

  • To provide genetic base for further hybridization of teak and to establish new combination of known parents for estimating hybrid vigour.

B. REGULAR ACTIVITIES/RESEARCH

  1. Identification, documentation and maintenance of plus trees of important tree species.

Pl.    :   Dr. Parvez Jalil

Objective:

  • To create a source of genetically superior material to be used in future tree improvement programmes.

  2. Maintenance of progeny trials (half-sib) of Tectona grandis.

Pl.    :   Dr. Parvez Jalil

   Objective:

  • To select best performing clones to get improved genetic material.

  3. Maintenance of seedling seed orchard of Gmelina arborea.

Pl.    :   Dr. Parvez Jalil

   Objectives:

  • To establish broader genetic base through seeds of selected plus trees.

  • Progeny testing of half-sib families.

  • To get quality seed for further tree improvement work.
