About SFRI

The Beginning

Forestry research in the state dates back to the year 1922, when Mr. J.W. Best was appointed as the first silviculturist of the then state of C.P. and Berar. Forestry research in the state was reorganized and State Forest Research Institute (SFRI), the first state level forest research institute in the country, came into existence on 27th June 1963 at Jabalpur, as per the recommendations of the 10th Silvicultural Conference held at Dehradun in 1961.

Grant of autonomy to the institute

The Government of Madhya Pradesh granted autonomy to the institute on 29th October, 1994 and thereafter, the institute was registered as a society under M.P. Societies Registration Act, 1973 w.e.f. 2nd August, 1995. The granting of autonomy provided functional freedom and facilitated strengthening of the infrastructure and technical manpower.
